Judging at BPP.Photography in Bad Honnef, Germany

This summer, I had the honor of being invited as a judge at BPP.Photography in Bad Honnef, Germany. The event brought together passionate photographers, inspiring works, and an atmosphere filled with creativity and constructive critique. Serving as a judge is always a responsibility — not only to evaluate the technical and artistic quality of the submitted images, but also to respect the courage and vision of each photographer who puts their work forward.

I had the privilege of sharing the judging panel with two incredible colleagues and friends: Brendan de Clercq from the Netherlands and Raïs De Weirdt from Belgium. Both are remarkable photographers and educators, and together we formed a team that balanced different perspectives, experiences, and approaches to photography. The discussions we shared during the judging process were as enriching as the images themselves — proof that photography is never one-dimensional, but always open to interpretation and dialogue.

The BPP (Bund Professioneller Portraitfotografen) has built a strong reputation in Europe for supporting professional photographers and fostering high standards in portraiture and beyond. Their events not only celebrate excellence but also create a platform for learning, growth, and exchange. To witness so many talented photographers present their vision was inspiring, and to contribute to this process was deeply rewarding.

The setting in Bad Honnef, a charming town on the banks of the Rhine, added to the experience. Surrounded by art, conversation, and new friendships, I was reminded once again why I love being part of this photographic community. It is about more than images — it is about connection, passion, and pushing the boundaries of storytelling.

I am grateful to BPP for the invitation, and to Brendan and Raïs for the camaraderie and insightful exchanges throughout the event. Judging is never easy, but when done with respect and shared passion, it becomes a celebration of photography itself.

Photography is not only about creating; it is also about learning from each other, growing together, and honoring the diversity of voices in our field.
